TV’s Ever the Golden Girl

Betty White’s much-anticipated outing as a Saturday Night Live host – at last! – a couple of nights ago was met with deafening applause…and it delivered both quality and ratings.

In other words: It was a hit! Thanks, in no small measure, to the actress’ professionalism and enduring talent. And I have to say that bringing back several of the shows female MVPs – hey there, Maya Rudolph, Anna Gasteyer, and Rachel Dratch…so nice to see ya! – was a stroke of genius that guaranteed a night full of laughs. (
Jay-Z, you were pretty good, too.)

Especially memorable to me was the digital short tribute from the cast to B.W., to the tune of the Golden Girls’ theme song, “Thank You for Being a Friend”:

It just sums up the episode so nicely, and shows White at her gamest.
More Sex, More Books

With the release of Sex and the City 2, what, less than 20 days away, anticipation is rising.

People – and by that I mean me! – can’t wait to see the ladies, the new men, Aidan, the city, and, of course, the clothes that Carrie & Co. will be rockin’.

Every detail of the oh-so-important latter topic will be covered in a new, official SATC 2 book coming out on May 18 featuring insider accounts from writer-director Michael Patrick King, as well as Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon.

Every single look that SJP et al. wear in the sequel is detailed in the 500-page tome, including the scoop of the ’80s fashion the women wear for their flashback scene.

Just Because, Pt. 60

I feel like Jake Gyllenhaal is out to kill me softly…with his hotness.

The guy is in fine form in London yesterday while promoting Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in a dapper blue suit and aviators.

What…a SILF.

Life After Keamy

Kevin Durand, a.k.a. Lost’s mercenary mofo Keamy, is looking ahead at life after the show.

The actor has lined up
back-to-back movies, beginning with I Am Number Four, the D.J. Caruso-directed, Sharlto Copley-starring movie about aliens posing as high schoolers on Earth. Durand would play the alien commander hunting them.

Then, the beefstastic guy is set to join Hugh Jackman in Shawn Levy’s Real Steel, a futuristic tale in which human-like robots fight it out in the boxing ring.

Mmm…if I didn’t know any better – which I don’t – I’d say Durand’s a bit hung up on appearances.

Up next, though, is Robin Hood, which arrives in theaters next week.

Is That You, Astronaut Mike Dexter?

Ever since I heard Matt Damon would be guesting on the May 20 season finale of 30 Rock I’ve been anticipating with breath that is bated finally – at last! – meeting Astronaut Mike Dexter, Liz Lemon’s (Tina Fey) wishful-thinking boyfriend.

As we learned from laughstastic
last night’s Mother’s Day-themed episode, Liz could’ve been Buzz Aldrin’s son…which means her mom, too, had a thing for space men.

I love that the fascination runs in the family.

So maybe, just maybe, Damon will be playing the man of her Liz’s dreams, Astronaut Mike Dexter. His
costume for the episode sure points that way.

Update: Turns out Damon did not play Astronaut Mike Dexter, after all.
Bitch from the Past

I love it: Kristen Bell is coming to a movie theater near me – and she’s bringing Betty White with her when she goes.

In Sept. 24’s You Again, Bell plays a woman whose brother intends to marry the bitch from high school (Odette Yustman) who made her teenage years a living hell.

The comedy co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis as Bell’s mom, Sigourney Weaver as Bell’s mom’s own rival, and Kristin Chenoweth, and White as – what else? – Bell’s force-of-nature grandma:

There She Goes

Kristen Stewart is squeezing in a prestige film between The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, in which she’ll star as Marylou.

Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles will beging filming in August in New Orleans and Montreal.

Garrett Hedlund, the star of the upcoming TRON: Legacy, will play the restless drifter Moriarty, while British thespian Sam Riley (24 Hour Party People) will portray his traveling companion Sal.
